In April 2014, a simple bike shop on Newport Boulevard in Costa Mesa transitioned into the hands of three successful Orange County entrepreneurs who had a passion for bike design, building and cycling. Partners in the American Flyer Bicycle Company; a Southern California, family owned and focused corporation, saw the opportunity for greatness and began the process of building an inventory of high quality bikes and hiring a top notch group of bike technicians.
Now, The Cyclist bike store is a stand-out bike sales and service haven along the busiest beach route in Southern California. Located at 1785 Newport Boulevard we are one mile from the beach, Pacific Coast Highway, and dozens of bike trails, from the tame to the daring.

Anywhere Bicycle Repair
In January of 2010, Stu set out to create a bike shop that focuses solely on service by not selling bikes. He started with a small pick-up truck and a small tool box and hit the bike paths to find customers. The free water and bananas Stu was giving out (still does to this day) on the bike paths branded us as the banana guys! When Stu started turning business away in the summer of 2013, because he was too busy to service all the demand by himself, he opened a shop and hired two full time mechanics. Our team of three work as a seamless machine!

Jax Bicycle Center
The JAX Bicycle Center's Story
In 1971, during the bicycle boom, Jack Salem started a small 1,500 square foot bicycle store in Long Beach, CA. His business expanded over the next 28 years to include four locations and to be known as Jax Bicycle Centers, one of the most respected retail bicycle businesses in America.
In the summer of 1976 in Orange County, CA Dave Hanson, an energetic high school sophomore, started in the bicycle business. Dave worked his way up from floor sweeper, to mechanic, to sales person, and finally as the manager of South Whittier Bike Shop. In 1982, Dave looking for a bigger challenge, took a position at a multi-store business. He stayed there for nine months and learned how not to run a retail bicycle business.
During the Reagan years, Dave was motivated to start his own business. He had seen the value of his home steadily increase and felt that he could better utilize the equity. So he worked with an owner to get his own shop. He borrowed on his home, cashed in his 401k, and quit his job. With a higher mortgage payment and more responsibilities, he found a partner and purchased La Habra Cyclery.
After two years and nine months, Dave got his partner to buy him out of La Habra Cyclery. He took that money and purchased Village Bicycle Shop in Yorba Linda. The La Habra deal didn't afford the outright buyout, so Dave made payments for five years on the Yorba Linda Shop purchase.
In June 1997, Dave got wind that Jack Salem was interested in selling his Jax Fullerton location, 45 days later, Dave owned it. That store was called The Bicycle Center because the "JAX" name was not available yet, as Jack owned three other Jax locations.
In 1998, through a conversation with Jack, Dave found out that Jack was ready to part with the other three shops. That night, in Dave's garage with a few Mickey's Big Mouths and a cigar, he decided he needed to beg, borrow, and steal again to make it happen. In March 1999, the other three Jax locations and the Jax Bicycle Center name were purchased. The strategy has been focused on constant improvement, constant learning, and consistent change in order to keep the business on the cutting edge of bicycle retail in Orange County, CA.
2000 to the present
Dave made a commitment in 2005 that he wanted to grow the business to ten locations and own five of his buildings within the next five years. As part of that vision, Dave purchased his sixth location in Claremont, CA in April 2006. At the same time, he purchased land and began the arduous process of building a small shopping center in Murrieta, CA
In 2007 we purchased a bicycle business in Mission Viejo, CA. In October 2009 we opened our Murrieta store, bringing the total to eight retail locations.
In 2007, Moment raised the bar on bicycle retail, offering superior bike fit, mechanical services, sales and rentals, with unparalleled customer service and attention to detail. Moment serves all athletes from entry level to world-class professional, with best in class products and services. Moment Bicycles has been voted the best bicycle and triathlon retailer in SoCal every year since inception. Come see why, and visit us at our Liberty Station location.

Pure Ride Cycles
We are the great team at Two Wheels One Planet-Lake Forest, with a FRESH new name. We felt the time was right to begin our own journey and give our store it's own identity. With over 25 years in the cycling industry we are committed to continuing to serve our cycling community with great products, service & passion. Don't be alarmed! The ownership has not changed, the store location is still the same & our philosophy of running the business is still top notch. Pure Ride Cycles is an expression of what we are and what we will continue to be.
Pure Passion.Pure Commitment.Pure Bliss!
RIDE Cyclery is a family-run bike shop with two locations in Southern California. Both offer a full range of services catering to every kind of rider, from beach cruising to century crushing. At the Encinitas shop, RIDE Cyclery offers a special focus on road bikes, and in Carlsbad, the emphasis is on mountain bikes.
RIDE has grown out of a long history in the community. Opened originally as McDougall’s in the 1990s, it later became Dan’s Coast Cyclery. After a tragic fire at the restaurant next door, the shop was rebuilt and reopened as an Electra concept store, before changing again to Encinitas Bicycle Retailer.
In 2010 current owners Brent and Amie Garrigus took the reigns and turned local history into a new idea for the shop’s future. They introduced a stronger focus on the enthusiast and racing community, while still supporting its recreational riders, some of whom have been with the store since its beginning, in each of its forms.
RIDE moved into the “big red barn” on Coast Hwy 101 and Encinitas Boulevard in 2012, with the thought that a new space would better reflect its new spirit. In 2015, they officially opened RIDE Cyclery’s second location in Carlsbad (on El Camino Real between Cannon and Tamarack) to help bring its quality service and support to the mountain biking community and beyond.
Brent has been a cyclist all his life, competing in BMX, road, and time trial (he is a former California State Time Trial Champion). The crew at RIDE is similarly enamored with all things two-wheeled. They are a diverse group with race resumes in road, mountain bike, and triathlon, as well as a healthy passion for introducing others to the sport (and others in the sport). They can help find the right bicycle for you, and get you professionally fit for maximum comfort and efficiency.
Rock N' Road Cyclery
Established in 1991, Rock N' Road Cyclery now has 4 state-of-the-art bike shops in Orange County, California. The first, located in Mission Viejo, just went through a total renovation. Now all 4 stores are Specialized Concept Stores, which means that the owners of Rock N' Road and Specialized Bicycle Company worked together to create a retail experience that is beyond that of any other bicycle retailer within 50 miles.
Company founder, Matt Ford, explains that this store and the three other Rock N' Road Cycle stores in OC are going to just keep improving on their advantage: "We have just added the most advanced bicycle fitting system available to our Mission Viejo location. The Specialized BG Data fitting system provides computerized analysis of every part of your riding style from both the side and the front while you are actually riding and under load."
The other three stores, located in Laguna Niguel, Anaheim Hills, and Irvine, provide the bicycling community in OC with more than just a place to buy a bike. Matt continues: "We want to provide riders with everything they need to maximize their riding experience. That goes far beyond gear and includes classes, rides, clubs, and involvement in the racing and touring communities."
In 2011, Jeff and Karen Sattler purchased Santiago Cycling in Tustin, CA (established in 1998) after moving from their home in Atlanta, GA. They have focused their attention on building a community and bicycle friendly culture first. As a result, business has grown by over 30% and club membership has doubled since taking ownership.
Santiago Cycling is a full service bike shop in the heart of Orange County, California. They proudly carry Trek, Gary Fisher and Electra bicycles and Bontrager components, gear and clothing. They service all makes and models of bicycles, performing everything from minor tune-ups to major overhauls. Visit www.santiagocycling.com for directions and store hours.
Santiago Cycling is also very involved in their community and generous in their charitable contributions, supporting Ride 2 Recovery and Operation of Hope. It is only natural that they also get involved with the National MS Society and their Bike MS Bay to Bay Tour.
Please go by their shop and say hello to Jeff, Karen, Bryce and the gang. They would love to meet you and help you in your quest to complete the Bike MS Tour.
